Abstract The cardiac cell may modulate its force of contraction using two different mechanisms, shown schematically in Fig. 8.1. First, the force of contraction can be increased or decreased by raising or decreasing the myoplasmic free Ca2+ concentration ([Ca2+]i) This mechanism may be designated as [Ca2+]; amplitude modulation.
