Abstract

Abstract Several classes of myosin heavy chain (MHC) kinases have been identified in various systems. For this review, we will focus on two distinct groups of myosin kinases, myosin II heavy chain kinase A (MHCK A} from Dictyostelium and related enzymes, and myosin I heavy chain kinase (MIHCK), identified in Dictyostelium and other systems. The interactions of broad specificity kinases such as protein kinase C (PKC) and CAM kinase ti with myosin have been reviewed elsewhere1 and will not be addressed here. Another myosin kinase not discussed here is the ‘PKC-MHCK’ from Dictyostelium, which appears to contain a catalytic domain related to PKC and a distinct catalytic domain related to diacylglycerol kinases. This latter enzyme appears to participate in myosin localization control during Dictyostelium chemotaxis.
