Abstract

The effects of oral contraceptives on uterine muscle activity were studied on 5 parous and normally ovulating women. Contraceptives containing a preponderance of estrogen will increase uterine activity, while the progesterone-dominated pills decrease myometrial activities. This was consistent with our hypothesis, that use of contraceptive pills with high estrogen content would show a pattern similar to that found during the proliferative or estrogen-dominated phase, whereas pills with predominantly progesterone compounds would show a pattern similar to the secretory phase of the menstrual cycle.
