Abstract

The effects of Ca agonists and antagonists on the stretch-induced contraction in arterial smooth muscles were studied. The stretch-induced contraction was potentiated by promotors of influx of Ca such as high K, cardiac glycosides, and BAY k 8644, a 1,4-dihydropyridine Ca agonist, while the potentiated responses were inhibited by Ca antagonists. The significance of myogenic tone of vascular tissues in physiological and pathological conditions is discussed.
