Abstract

The ultrastructure of the myocardium was evaluated in perfused-fixed hearts from rats acutely stressed by exhaustive exercise. Vesiculations in the intercalated disc region, which arise from non-specialized gaps and communicate with T tubules, show varying degrees of dilatation. Mitochondria and sarcoplasmic reticulum maintain normal ultrastructure. Alterations after acute exercise may be related to ionic changes.
