Abstract

Ewing (1938) separated the myobiid mites as a subfamily of the CHEYLETIDAE; and from the genus Myobia Heyden he removed several species, establishing for them three new genera. As generic characters the number of segments of the first pair of legs and the number of tarsal claws on the second pair of legs were used. The shape of the penis may also prove to be of assistance in defining genera or species groups; this has been previously used as a specific character. The classification of the dorsal setae as submedian and lateral is followed here as proposed by Ewing (op. cit.: 181-183). In addition the setae about the anus are here employed taxonomically, and are termed circumanal setae. Two species of Protomyobia Ewing, 1938 were found, and these may be separated by the following key:
