Abstract

A new species of Zopfia, Z. albiziae, on Albizia roots is described; the new combination Stomiopeltis parkinsoniae (Heald & Wolf) Farr is proposed for Dimerosporium parkinsoniae; Stomiopeltis tephrosiae Viegas is reduced to synonymy under S. parkinsoniae and Dimerosporium beloperonis Viegas under Asterina costaricensis Syd.; Peltaster intermedius Farr is transferred to Pycnoseynesia; and five fungi are listed from new localities and/or new hosts. A NEW SPECIES OF ZOPFIA ON ALBIZIA A collection of Albizia lebbek (L.) Benth. roots sent to, the National Fungus Collections from Texas revealed an ascomycete strik- ing because of its large spores, which resemble those of Caryospora. The latter genus, however, produces ostiolate ascocarps (Ellis and Everhart, 1892; Jeffers, 1940; Winter in Rabenhorst, 1885), whereas, those of the Albizia root fungus are completely closed and apparently indehiscent. This fungus hence should be placed in Zopfia Rab., a genus intermediate between the Pyrenomycetes and the Tuberaceae (Arnaud, 1913). It may be a harmful parasite. Robert Runyon, the collector, stated (personal communication) that several trees were killed in the area where he collected the fungus. Zopfia rhizophila Rab. is associated with and believed to be the cause of root rot of asparagus.
