Abstract

From 4,000 single sputa of tuberculous patients in South Africa, about 2,000 strains of mycobacteria were isolated on L. J. media. All wereM. tuberculosis, except 14 strains of atypical mycobacteria. NoM. bovis, M. kansasii orM. avium strains were found. For the differentiation of the atypical mycobacteria, the following tests were used: drug resistance by the absolute concentration method, niacin, catalase, temperature tolerance, photochromogenicity, growth rate, amidase, and virulence in guinea pigs, fowls, rabbits and mice. Two cases of mycobacterioses caused byM. intracellularis are described. The other 12 strains were not regarded as pathogens. Only 1 per 1,000 cases of lung tuberculosis was caused by mycobacteria other thanM. tuberculosis.
