Abstract

This paper is the first report on the collection, isolation, and culture evaluation of the naturally occurring Philippine strain of Lentinus strigosus. In secondary mycelial growth, Sabouraud dextrose agar and coconut water agar were the most suitable culture media, which showed the fast rate of mycelia growth and produced very thick mycelia density. Cracked corn as granulated spawning material recorded the shortest incubation period of 7.33 days. The possibility of L. strigosus fruiting body production on rice straw and sawdust based substrate formulations was demonstrated. Pure rice straw produced the highest total yield of fruiting bodies (104.87 g/bag) and biological efficiency (20.97%). However, substrate supplementation must be investigated in order to improve the yield and biological efficiency. The chemical constituents and biological activities of L. strigosus are currently under investigation.
