Abstract

Subject Mining sector and investment in Myanmar. Significance On March 7, it was reported that authorities were assessing the viability of two foreign mining companies' applications to begin exploratory operations in Chin State, particularly regarding land rights and security. Implementing regulations for Myanmar's new mining law are expected to be released soon. The country's considerable natural resource wealth is well known, as is the extractives sector's national economic importance. However, mining-related investment in Myanmar is a risky business proposition. Impacts Myanmar's gem mining faces constrained growth unless and until US sanctions are lifted. Currently, the state lacks the capacity, and the next government the political freedom, to tackle fully mining corruption. The new government's reduction of the number of government ministries could slow mining law implementation.
