Abstract

Texas Health Resources (THR) is one of the largest hospital systems in the north Texas region. It is a not-for-profit system consisting of 14 wholly owned facilities, ambulatory sites, and numerous joint ventures throughout north Texas. The nursing structure is coordinated, but organizationally complex, with a system chief nursing executive (CNE) at the helm. Each wholly owned facility has a chief nursing officer (CNO) who functions as an equal with the president and chief medical officer (CMO) of the hospital. The CNO, CMO, and president, known as the triad, report to different leaders in a structure of geographically divided zones. To align with best practice within a Magnet® facility, THR nursing leadership created various nursing councils at each entity that are overseen by a system nursing operations council (NOC). To ensure system-wide representation, NOC is composed of 1 manager-level nursing representative from each hospital. Each representative serves a two-year term. A CNO provides sponsorship for the council and the vice president of professional practice, a human resources representative, and a nursing finance representative are included on the council.
