Abstract

The first time I saw Rudy Kalman was around 1964 at Purdue University while attending a lecture he was giving. I can't remember the subject. At that time I was a young, inexperienced graduate student, and I didn't know who he was. That changed quite fast with my exposure to courses on linear systems, estimation theory, optimal control, and stability theory, since these were all subjects upon which Rudy's research was having a huge impact. I soon realized that the person who I had seen give that lecture was actually a celebrity.
