Abstract

This chapter offers a detailed account on Lin Yutang’s path to international renown through his interpretation of China, that is, through the publication of his My Country and My People in the USA. What differentiates Lin Yutang with most other modern Chinese intellectuals is that Lin was perhaps the only Chinese intellectual in his time who won international recognition for interpreting and introducing Chinese cultural ideas to the world. This chapter discusses the actual process of the making of this book as well as its reception in China and the USA, by highlighting the unique collaboration between Lin and his American friends Pearl S. Buck and Richard Walsh, which is a major focus of the book.
