Abstract
This corpus-based qualitative and quantitative study aims to track the development of the expressive marker my bad over time and through different genres. For this, the Corpus of Historical American English, the Corpus of Contemporary American English, as well as the Movie Corpus and the Corpus of Global Web-Based English are investigated. It is shown that the structure has expanded in the late 20th century and its use has been increasing significantly in the early 21st century, first in telecinematic discourse, but then also in other genres of informal language use. While earliest examples are attested in American movies and also television discourse, usage extends into other informal genres of the language in the late 20th century and the structure can now be found in varieties of English internationally.
