Abstract
This paper demonstrates the applicability of the method of weighted residuals (MWR) and the technique of modal control to distributed parameter systems such as parallel- and counter-flow heat exchangers with inlet fluid temperature or flow rate forcing. First, it is shown that the MWR approximate systems may give good approximations to the original distributed parameter systems with only the first few terms of the coordinate functions. Then, it is also shown that it is possible to improve easily the dynamics of distributed parameter systems by using feedback loops obtained by modal analysis.
