INTRODUCTION Whils t the p r inc ip les of the M u t u a l Recognition legislation may be understood by its designers, the Commonweal th and state and territory governments , the real question is whether or not it is understood, or its existence even known of, by those who stand to be affected by it most that is, the nurses of Austra l ia? Reproduced , wi th permission, in this article is information on the legislation as it applies to nursing. It is drawn from a paper prepared on the subject by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recogni t ion (NOOSR). NOOSR was es tab l i shed by the D e p a r t m e n t of Employment and Education in 1989 to work with Australian states and territories and professional bodies to improve recognition procedures in Australia for professionals qualified overseas.
