Abstract

Abstract Experimental evidence is presented which supports the contention that anodic dissolution can occur in iron under strong cathodic polarization conditions. This evidence takes the form of metallographic observations of surface nucleated macrocracks, as well as the presence of ferrous ions in that part of the electrolyte in contact with such cracks. The implications of the presence of these cracks on material integrity and the efficacy of cathodic protection are briefly discussed.
