Abstract

SUMMARY: Bacteria carrying an R factor conferring resistance to low concentrations of streptomycin frequently give highly resistant variants. Resistance to high concentrations of streptomycin can arise in a sensitive bacterium either from a single mutation or as the result of successive mutations in different genes (Demerec, 1948; Hsu & Herriott, 1961). The resistance genes may be either in the chromosome or in an R factor.
