Abstract

Freak shows have always had a macabre fascination. From the public spectacle of Bedlam, memorably painted by Hogarth in the Rake’s Progress, to the social championing of Joseph ‘Elephant Man’ Merrick in late Victorian times to the current and relentless fascination with celebrity: each suggests that society does indeed attract the public figures it deserves.
