Abstract

The paper presents 1580 mutants affecting the deposition of epicuticular waxes in cultivated barley and localized to 79 different cer loci. These mutations have been induced by various mutagens: ionizing radiations, organic chemicals, and the inorganic sodium azide (NaN,). With special emphasis on mutations obtained after treatment with NaN3, the paper aims at a comprehensive analysis of mutagen specific reactions of cer loci. Different cer loci have different mutabilities, irrespectively of treatment with one or another mutagen, It is equally obvious that different cer loci quite frequently show markedly differing mutagen specific reactions. Whereas ethylene imine and sulfonates show similar patterns of mutagenic efficiency on the present cer loci, there are strong differences between the organic chemicals and sodium azide, which in its turn differs less from the physical mutagens X-rays and neutrons than do the organic chemicals. The relationships among the three main kinds of mutagen seem to be best visualized in the shape of a triangle than as points on a straight line.
