Abstract

Background: Proper metered-dose inhaler (MDI) use is essential for effective management of asthma symptoms, but reports show that many patients do not use them effectively. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommends that healthcare providers educate and assess patients’ MDI technique at each opportunity. Our site had performed a pilot study that showed mean correct 7-step MDI use by parents on admission, after in-hospital training, and at 2 weeks post discharge of 5.7 (SD 1.6), 7 (SD 0), and 4.8 (SD 1.3), suggesting need for continued training outside the hospital.
