Abstract

Mussel-inspired polydopamine has attracted considerable research interest in anticorrosive fields owing to its unique adhesive properties, versatile functionalization ability and corrosion inhibiting property. In this study, we synthesized free-standing polydopamine nanosheets (PDANS) with a well-defined structure and controllable thickness under a mild condition, and PDANS could be uniformly dispersed in ethanol and curing agent. Besides, PDANS were first incorporated into the water-borne epoxy (WEP) coating, and results revealed that adding little PDANS in WEP matrix could achieve remarkable enhancement in the anticorrosion performance. This is because PDANS not only improve the diffusion resistance of corrosive medium in WEP matrix, but also have a strong interfacial bonding with WEP owing to their abundant surface groups. This work will provide a new strategy for fabricating polymeric coatings with superior anticorrosion performance.
