Abstract

Since September 11, 2001, despite the lack of a major act of Muslim terrorism in the United States, the question remains as to whether there is a significant base of anti-American radicalism among Muslims in America—whether there is or could be an Islamist Fifth Column. Three publications on the issue, one several years old, two recent, deal with critical aspects of this subject. While all claim to be optimistic on the subject, an alternative reading gives at least significant grounds for concern. A substantial portion of Muslims in the US remain ambiguous or hostile in their attitudes not just towards American policy toward the Muslim world(s), but toward the United States itself.
