Abstract

Senator Muskie faced a situation in which he had to undermine the effects of a strong Republican offensive as well as reemphasize the viability of the Democratic Party. Hence his speech, which resulted in an impressive personal if not party victory, demonstrated rhetorical strategies and tactics designed to accomplish both of these goals.
