Abstract
Torsion balances and torsion pendulums have been associated with the measurement of the Newtonian gravitational constant from Cavendish through Eötvös and Heyl. The usual suspension consists of a single fine fibre supporting the small test mass, ordinarily a dumbbell of some type. Problems with this system are discussed and some of the advantages of using a bifilar suspension are posited.
