Abstract

For more than 30 years, music therapy has been part of multi-disciplinary palliative care programs for terminally ill patients. Music therapists use active and receptive treatments such as relaxation/ imagery, songs and improvisation techniques to maintain or enhance the patient's quality of life on a psychological, physical, social and spiritual dimension. Despite positive clinical experiences in the field, there is still a lack of empirical evidence on the indication and effectiveness of music therapy in palliative care. Some recent studies examined the effects of music therapy on outcomes such as quality of life, pain, anxiety and spiritual well-being of palliative patients. This article describes the interventions, outcome criteria, and the current state of research on music therapy in the palliative setting.
