Abstract

Abstract This chapter explores music therapy and music education as interconnected musical-relational practices and presents these fields as lying on a continuum. With the foundational assumption that an ethic of care is an integral element of therapeutic process, the author examines points of relevance for music educators from the theories and practices of music-centered music therapists. Research surrounding the therapeutic relationship, along with practices from creative music therapy and community music therapy, are considered with respect to their intersections with music education practice. That the work of music educators is relevant for music therapists is also noted, highlighting the significance of transdisciplinary collaboration between these related disciplines.
