Abstract

Malcolm Budd argues that spatial metaphors are not involved in the musical experience at the 'foundational' level, and that my attempt to show that the musical experience is dependent on spatial concepts is therefore unwarranted. The argument that Budd gives for this conclusion does not seem to me to achieve its purpose, and his alternative suggestion, that musical movement is 'merely temporal' does not, I argue, amount to a genuine alternative. He is right to worry about my account of 'double intentionality', and about the relation between experience and concept. But these worries refer to general problems in the philosophy of mind and perception, and have no special bearing on the experience of music.
