Abstract

It should be emphasized that much will be lost if music is treated as a separate strand of history; it should be fully integrated with the history of the period being studied. There are a large number of good music reference books, though only two are specifically written for children. One of them is quite outstanding for its illustrations and text, with entries under composers, musicians, instruments, styles and musical theory: P. A. Scholes, The Oxford Junior Companion to Music for the 9-16 age-group. Very young children are not particularly well served with music books, but there is a Ladybird Book, G. Brace, The Story of Music, which may be useful. More attractive to children is B. Britten and I. Hoist, The Wonderful World of Music, which is well written and superbly illustrated. There are many musical examples and good illustrations; the print and presentation are particularly clear and attractive.
