Abstract

Abstract This chapter focuses on the use of music by music therapists, to address functional gains and the social, emotional, and psychological needs of children with neurological problems. The way in which music is used with this population is presented, including its use as an assessment tool to reveal and evaluate the neurological function of the child or young person, as a powerful stimulus to support neuroplasticity in the recovery of function and also the rehearsal of daily routines for activities of daily living, and as a tool to promote participation in rehabilitation for children with acquired brain injury. Hypothetical cases based on clinical experiences are used to provide exemplars of pediatric music therapy in neurorehabilitation. The explanations within these reveal the clinical thinking behind the interventions.
