Abstract

The article raises the problem of teaching subjects of the music-theoretical cycle, including harmony, to highly gifted students using the example of Sergei S. Prokofiev’s experience. On the basis of letters, diaries and memoirs, the history of the composer’s education in harmony as a key element of “music theory” is traced: from childhood to the end of the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Prokofiev’s teachers were excellent musicians: Yuri N. Pomerantsev, Reingold M. Glier, Mikhail M. Chernov, Anatoly K. Lyadov, he was unable to appreciate the importance of this subject and was greatly burdened by it. In conclusion, the importance of teaching harmony in close connection with musical practice is emphasised, especially if the student has outstanding composing abilities.
