Abstract

The methods of teaching and modes of transmission that are utilised in music learning and teaching contexts are as diverse as music itself. Music teachers may utilise a range of methods including having students: listen to and watch them demonstrate a particular phrase or piece; move or clap to the beat of the song being learnt or use hand signs; signal a position that creates a certain sound or effect; sing or perform a phrase themselves; compose or improvise in response to a phrase; and/or demonstrate or explain a concept with the assistance of technology. Similarly, a range of modes of transmission may be used such as aural, gestural, linguistic, spatial or visual and often these are used in ensembles to make meaning. Different socio-cultural practices impact on the methods and modes selected by music teachers. Understanding these combinations can provide a deeper understanding of music learning and teaching across a range of contexts.
