Abstract
Chapter 2 was written by Yang Jiansheng and Lai Jinjinin and translated by Xue Ping. As a retrospective of Western music, the chapter reviews its diversified development in the twentieth century, the booming of Western music during the Romantic period, the Baroque period and the Classical period, through to the early development of Western music during the medieval and the Renaissance periods.
