Abstract

The incidence of mushroom poisoning varies geographically depending on climate, life-style and local traditions. Toxic mushrooms are ingested for the following reasons: • confusion between edible and poisonous species • unawareness of the risks • intentional ingestion of psychotropic mushrooms • accidental ingestion by children • suicidal ingestion (very rare). Diagnosis is aimed at determining the type of mushroom poisoning and its severity. It involves taking a careful history, assessment of the clinical features, sometimes examination of mushroom specimens by a mycologist, and chemical analysis of body specimens (available only for amatoxins).
