Abstract
The building is situated on land that has been gained from the sea, next to the jetty «Barrio de la Maza». It consists of two storeys and a semi basement, divided into two sections: a) Research section with laboratories and pertaining premises. b) Museum and public section, where the results of the marine research expeditions are exhibited; lecture rooms, etc. An attempt has been made to provide the two sections with the greatest possible independence in addition to an adequate connection. The prevailing aesthetic criteria are: a) The glass covered corridors «Los Cantones » and «La Marina» with white painted wooden carpentry. b) The presence of the ruins of the ancient town wall of La Coruna. c) The water, which is the main reason for the activities of this Centre. The construction is of fair faced concrete, exterior and interior wooden carpentry, aluminium blinds and double window panes with Venetian blinds between them.

Por el Instituto Español de Oceanografía se decidió construir en La Coruña un laboratorio como centro de las investigaciones que, sobre el mar, su flora y fauna, se habían de iniciar en el noroeste de la península. No se ha querido proyectar un edificio pretencioso, torres o pantallas, sino algo a escala humana, respetando al mismo tiempo el perfil clásico de la ciudad por esta zona. Ha sido empeño del Instituto Español de Oceanografía el que su obra no fuese para uso exclusivo de los científicos que en él trabajan, sino un edificio en el que el pueblo de La Coruña pueda aprender y tomar contacto directo con la investigación de lo que tiene tan cerca: el mar y sus inmensas fuentes de energía y belleza
