Abstract

Muscle and Sensory Testing Author: REESE, Nancy Berryman, PhD, PT (Univ of Central Arkansas) Bibliographic Data: (ISBN: 0-7216-5958-6, WB Saunders Company, 1999, $45.00) 530 pages, Contributors, spiral bound cover Audiences: Physical Therapists, Occupational Therapists, Clinicians, Students Other Info: The book contains black-and-white illustrations. DESCRIPTION: This clinical text provides thorough coverage of testing procedures related to manual muscle testing, handheld dynamometer muscle strength assessment, and neurologic screening. A brief section on observational gait analysis as it applies to manual muscle testing is also included. PURPOSE: The author’s primary intent is to integrate manual muscle test procedures with neurologic screening techniques. This is a worthy objective and fills a void in some of the more traditional texts currently used in this area. The finished product meets the author’s objectives. AUDIENCE: This is an excellent resource for physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other health professionals who routinely evaluate musculoskeletal integrity in clinical practice. A previous background in anatomy and basic understanding of kinesiology is assumed. The format of the text makes it ideal for use in a lecture or laboratory setting. FEATURES: Nine chapters are presented including fundamentals of manual muscle testing, manual muscle testing procedures for all major muscle groups in the body, a section on pediatric muscle testing, gait analysis as a screening tool, and a comprehensive section on neurologic exam procedures. A chapter review of handheld dynamometry is also included. References and a bibliography for each chapter are included. I especially liked the section on neurologic screening. The author presents the information in a very concise and readable format. The sections on pediatric muscle testing, handheld dynamometry, and the inclusion of gait analysis make this book unique. The manual muscle test procedures are clearly presented. ASSESSMENT: This book is comprehensive and would be ideal for a physical therapy theory and procedures course. In addition, practicing clinicians will find it to be an excellent reference. I highly recommend this book for students and clinicians and commend the author and contributors for their insight in publishing this “one stop” reference manual. SCORE: Weighted Numerical Score: 93-****
