Abstract

Homicide–suicide is a pattern of homicide that is distinct. The perpetrators are typically older, male, and kill their spousal partner, children, and other family members. Women typically kill their children. The episode usually involves the killer deciding to commit suicide rather than as an episode of remorse. The reasons for homicide–suicides include breakdown in the spousal relationship, financial stressors, mental illness, and ill health in older couples. Firearms use is high in these events. The rates of homicide–suicide vary less than overall homicide rates, though higher rates are seen in countries with higher overall homicide rates.
