Abstract

Professor Peter Read delivered this paper as the Keynote Address at the Annual Meeting of the Australian Historical Association, July 2005. References have been added but the text of the paper remains in the form of a spoken address. The original research for the paper was undertaken at the request of the Australian National Archives, Canberra, for the production of ‘Dhakiyarr Wirrpanda’ in the website biographical feature Uncommon Lives. The author thanks the Archives sincerely for the opportunity to undertake the research, for providing the research material and for arranging his trip to Dhuruputjpi to interview Dhukal and Wuyal Wirrpanda. This essay, and the documents on which it is based, may be seen at: http://uncommonlives.naa.gov.au/. This article has been peer-reviewed.
