Abstract

The spectrum of muon pairs, created by pion annihilation π + π −→ μ + μ −, is estimated in the framework of a string model for ultrarelativistic nuclear collisions. Applied to O+ Au collisions at 200 A GeV for pair masses below 1.5 GeV the pion annihilation is more important than the Drell-Yan spectrum, whereas in the J/ ψ mass region it is negligible.
