Abstract

Mungbean yellow mosaic virus (MYMV) and Mungbean yellow mosaic India virus (MYMIV) are whitefly transmitted geminiviruses belonging to the genus Begomovirus of the family Geminiviridae . They cause yellow mosaic and golden mosaic disease in number of leguminous crops in Indian subcontinent; the worst affected crops are mungbean, blackgram, and soybean. Both MYMV and MYMIV are endemic in distribution and outside the subcontinent, only MYMV has been reported in Thailand. Except for Thailand isolates, all the isolates of MYMV and MYMIV characterized so far are not sap transmissible and have a narrow host range within legumes. Genomic components of about 25 isolates of MYMV and MYMIV have been characterized and genome organization is found to be similar to that of bipartite Old World begomoviruses. A phylogenetic tree constructed based on DNA-A sequences revealed their distinct lineage when compared with other Indian begomoviruses. MYMV and MYMIV isolates occupy a unique branch well separated from other begomoviruses of the Indian subcontinent.
