Abstract

This paper presents a multi-user virtual reality classroom with 3D interaction and real-time motion detection through the use of Microsoft kinect. We have developed a multi-user virtual classroom environment with features such as chat, user information display, instructor behavior detection, management control, session recording etc. The management features provide a complete control for the instructor to manage the virtual classroom environment and student activity, such as talking and chatting. The motion detection links the instructor's movement in real-time with the represented avatar in the virtual classroom. We hypothesis that the virtual reality classroom will allow for better learning experiences and will facilitate the mental construction of three-dimensional space due to the sense of presence a virtual environment provides. The proposed virtual reality classroom environment mimics the real-time classroom and enhances the learning through real-time interaction between the students and the instructor.
