Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) has been recognized as one of the important paradigms of the last decade on account of the emergence of smart devices, which are used in various application areas of our daily lifestyle. Gateways play an important role in IoT as they are capable of filtering the data that is being communicated to the cloud platforms. A gateway works as a link between wireless communications technologies, which implies that it acts as a mediator to establish a connection between the cloud and the controller in the IoT. Due to the high cost of IoT gateways, cost-effective gateway placement may be achieved by combining IoT gateways with devices named “solution specific gateways” to formulate multi-technology gateways. Thus, there is a need for a comprehensive review of the working and application of IoT gateways in terms of aspects like deployment, security, device management, and cloud integration. There is a requirement for the effective management of the gateways, and the same has been addressed through the comparative analysis done for the IoT gateways on the basis of frameworks being developed, parameters used, and deployment related requirements. Open research gaps and issues that have been identified in this area have also been highlighted, and the possible solutions are also defined in this paper.
