Abstract

We report on the field emission properties of tungsten oxide nanowires grown on a tungstentip and its emission performance in various vacuum conditions. Tungsten oxide(W18O49) nanowires were grown by thermal chemical vapour deposition in a mixture ofCH4 andH2 on anelectrochemically sharpened tungsten tip. The field emission measurements showed a low threshold field of∼0.95 V µm−1, high emissioncurrent of 170 µA and a large field enhancement factor of∼19 800. High emissioncurrent of a few µA was also observed in relatively poor vacuum at3 × 10−3 Torr, and the emission properties were recoverable at1 × 10−6 Torr.
