Abstract

In this abstract, we discuss some fundamental issues of seismic envelope inversion (EI). Firstly, we give the relationship between beat tone inversion and envelope inversion. Then, we use a combined model test to prove the reliability of low-frequency information recovered by envelope inversion. We believe that envelope inversion was a powerful tool to recover low-wavenumber components of the velocity model. However, the EI method can be trapped into local minima as well, when it comes the observed data with higher dominant frequency band. To address this, we propose the multi-scale envelope inversion strategy based on scale separation of seismic data. Numerical tests illustrate that the multi-scale envelope inversion method can reduce the well-known cycle-skipping problem effectively.
