Abstract

The limited available spectrum for ultrahigh frequency (UHF) communication via geostationary satellites is entirely occupied, and the throughput cannot be increased with conventional techniques. However, multiple-input–multiple-output (MIMO) communication can further enhance the data rate for fixed bandwidth and transmit power. This letter presents measurement results of the mobile MIMO UHF channel using multiple satellites as relays. The MIMO channel for different antenna setups is characterized with respect to the achievable spectral efficiency. An antenna setup is proposed that optimizes the spectral efficiency for mobile receivers.
