Abstract

In this investigation, the effect of several parameters such as abrasive material, slurry grit size, tool material and ultrasonic power rating on the machining performance of Ultrasonic Machining (USM) has been evaluated using pure titanium (ASTM Grade-I) as work material. The machining characteristics that are being investigated are Material Removal Rate (MRR), Tool Wear Rate (TWR) and roughness of the machined surface. The study makes use of experimentation planned and executed as per Taguchi's robust design methodology. The results obtained have been analysed by using Analysis Of Variance (ANOVA) and relative significance of various factors has been evaluated. The information thus obtained has been used to construct a macro-model for USM of titanium. Multi-response optimisation was performed using Taguchi's method in conjunction with utility concept for simultaneous optimisation of the machining characteristics.
