Abstract
A method for investigation of the electronic structure of atomic clusters based on polarization phenomena is proposed. The quadrupole moments of the vacancies produced by fast charged particles in the valence zone of the atomic clusters are calculated in the framework of the spherical jellium model. It is demonstrated that the value of the quadrupole moment is very sensitive to the structure of the states of the valence electrons.
