Abstract
Intense multiply charged heavy ion beams may be produced through single-impact ionization with subsequent shakeoff of electrons when heavy elements are introduced into presently available mirror-contained contained energetic electron plasmas. Uniform steady-state currents of 6 mA of Xe 12+ over a 300 cm 2 area appear likely.
