Abstract

The degree of aggregation among the particles in preparations of vaccinia virus has been evaluated by electron microscopy and found to be closely correlated with surviving plaque titer after irradiation with either soft X-rays or gamma rays from137 Cs. Low plaque titer of dispersed virus preparations is increased by aggregating the particles after irradiation, showing that the high survival in aggregated preparations is not the result of protection. This evidence of multiplicity reactivation (MR) is displayed equally by virus irradiated with soft X-rays or with gamma rays, and it is similar in magnitude to that shown with ultraviolet rays. In this respect the response of vaccinia virus differs sharply from that previously shown for the coliphages which exhibit no MR if exposed to soft X-rays prior to adsorption by host cells.
