Abstract

In earlier papers the electronic states and properties of hot ions generated by ionizing radiation in mono [1–4] and binuclear complexes of molybdenum [5] have been defined. Among binuclear complexes the cluster compounds are important, and are subject of investigations. In these the salt containing binuclear molybdenum cluster ions are more interesting. Salts containing these ions are useful, for example, for oxidation of NO [6]. Exchange of ligands in [Mo2Cl8]-4, especially for π-acceptors, related to change of oxidation state or to preservation of +2 oxidation state is usually connected with the reduction of bond order or complete cleavage of quadruple cluster bond. Cotton et al. have succeeded in achieving the reduction of [Mo2Cl8]-4 to Mo2(I) preserving cluster system with the reduction of bond order to Mo Mo.
